Most professional artists agree that the best way to paint a portrait is to have the model before you.
However, few commissions are willing to sit for hours. The necessary skill comes from an artist who has mileage on her brush as painter from life. The result is that a painting from a photo can have that look of the other with the signature, vigorous, confident brushwork and a certain messiness that comes with, knowing the sitter is about to move.
